TOKYO, Sep. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Coca-Cola (Japan) Co., Ltd., its 12 bottling partners and other affiliates of the Coca Cola system in Japan have determined to install vending machines employing LED lighting in product displays for all new purchases of machines for beverage products in cans and PET bottles, starting from 2012. This decision was made under the Coca-Cola system’s global business guiding principle, “Live Positively,” and as part of its environmental initiatives for a sustainable society.

Compared to the conventional fluorescent lighting, LED lighting reduces energy usage by 70% on an average. The Coca-Cola system has cooperated with voluntary action plans of the soft drink industry, and through various measures to improve energy-saving functions and the introduction of new technologies, annual power consumption for vending machines has been reduced by approximately 66% over the last 10 years. Now with the energy saving from these lighting changes, the system is aiming for even greater reduction of electric energy.

Bearing the responsibility as the leader of the beverage industry, the Coca-Cola system has actively engaged in the innovation of vending machines. Those efforts include the prevention of global warming through its promotion of HFC-free models, the introduction of energy-saving technologies, and the deployment of “social contribution” vending machines with disaster relief and donation features as well as machines with solar panels and green roof tops. We will strive to continually and proactively improve the environmental performance of our vending machines to achieve business growth that is harmonious with a sustainable society.
