DIRECTV Teams with Miso (DISH) (DTV) (NFLX) (T) (VZ)

DIRECTV(DTV), the largest satellite TV operator in the U.S., recently partnered Miso to combine latter’s social TV network facility with its television viewing.

Miso is a TV-based social network that lists the most popular shows, provides show updates and offers a platform to connect with other fans.

The new software once downloaded on mobile phones or iPad's will allow the subscribers to use it like a remote and help them to find out popular TV programs as well as share it with their friends over the social network, thus avoiding manual search and enhances improved television viewing experience. Moreover, it also follows comments about the show on Facebook or Twitter.

Another exciting feature of this application is that it easily identifies the program, which the user is currently watching and the user can also earn points while using its service.

DIRECTV subscribers with HD set-top boxes can avail this facility, which adds a new dimension to the new age of television viewing. However, one thing that should be taken care of while using the facility is that the phone and DIRECTV Internet-enabled receiver should be on the same Wi-Fi network.

We believe that DIRECTV remains one of the few pay-TV service providers that are still generating commendable video subscriber growth. Strong fundamentals along with huge subscriber growth across all its segments make it quite popular within the pay-TV industry.

However, within the satellite TV industry, DIRECTV is facing intense competition from its nearest rival DISH Network (DISH). Furthermore, U.S. telecom giants, AT&T (T) and Verizon Wireless (VZ) are increasingly rolling out their fiber-based network in order to provide video services. Additionally, the newly developed Internet video streaming companies like Netflix (NFLX), Hulu, YouTube have become major threats to the overall pay-TV industry.

We, thus, maintain our long-term Neutral recommendation for DIRECTV. Currently, DIRECTV has a Zacks #3 Rank, implying a short-term Hold rating on the stock.
