Healthways (HWAY), the well-being enhancement company, and statistical research services provider Gallup recently announced the results of the monthly Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index (“WBI”) Report for June 2011. The overarching WBI measure remained relatively high at 66.7.
Among the WBI sub-components, the Emotional Health Index stagnated at 79.6 for the second month in a row. The Life Evaluation Index was virtually unmoved at 49.9, with 3.4% of Americans reporting that they were suffering and 53.3% stating that they were thriving.
Healthy behaviors among Americans fell to the lowest level seen in any month of June since the WBI was created in 2008. The Healthy Behavior Index continued to languish, up only 0.2 points, from May, to 64. Roughly 66.5% of Americans dined healthily the entire previous day while 55.7% consumed at least 5 servings of vegetables and fruits on a minimum of 4 days in the prior week. Also, 53.4% of Americans stated that they exercised for a minimum of 30 minutes on at least three days in the prior week.
The Work Environment Index was slightly up to 47.5 in June but the index still recorded its fifth serial month of lowest scores in 42 months. Among the other indices, the Basic Access Index remained at a low level of 82.0, unchanged from the prior month, with 91.1% of Americans stating it was simple to get fresh vegetables and fruits. This represented 3.2 million fewer people with comfortable access to fresh produce, year over year. Furthermore, 90.4% of Americans reported having sufficient funds to provide adequate shelter at all times during the previous 12 months.
