Intel at MWC 2019: 5G & Edge Computing Remain Focal Points

Zacks

Intel INTC made a number of announcements at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 in Barcelona.

The company introduced the Intel FPGA Programmable Acceleration Card N3000 or Intel FPGA PAC N3000. This solution is aimed at accelerating “virtualized network functions”, including 5G radio access networks (RAN) and other core network-based applications. The solution is currently in sampling with Affirmed Networks and Rakuten, with product delivery scheduled around third-quarter 2019.

Intel also provided a preview of Intel Xeon D family dubbed as Hewitt Lake by the company. It projects to offer a customized SoC configuration to accelerate edge computing for power-efficient storage and security with Hewitt Lake.

It is to be noted that at the CES 2019, Intel unveiled the Snow Ridge leveraging system-on-chip (SoC) 10-nanometer (nm) technology, in a bid to enhance wireless base station computing with RAN capabilities. The company is already witnessing adoption of the solution from Ericsson ERIC. With the latest offering, Ericsson aims to provide robust RAN Compute solutions.

Intel unveiled open-source based Open Network Edge Services Software or the OpenNESS toolkit in order to help developers design innovative applications to explore edge computing and 5G use cases.

With an aim to enhance the Intel XMM 8160 5G modem with multimode-based 5G radio frequency (RF) capabilities, the company has inked an alliance with Skyworks SWKS. The company noted that the 5G modem, anticipated to be available around first-quarter 2020, will support “2G, 3G, CDMA, TDSCDMA, LTE, 5G and GNSS” technologies.

Intel’s latest 5G modem is anticipated to strengthen the company’s competitive position across the smartphone, automotive applications, wearables, cellular infrastructure solutions and connected devices end-markets.

Notably, Fibocom, a cellular M.2 module manufacturer, announced at the event that it will integrate Intel’s XMM 8160 5G modem to strengthen the product portfolio of the former, which is encouraging.

Additionally, in order to upgrade to the 5G modem, the company is witnessing adoption of Intel XMM 7560 gigabit LTE modem from gateway manufacturing companies, including Arcadyan, D-Link, VVDN and Gemtek.

Key Takeaways

Intel’s partnerships and product launches at the event revolved primarily around 5G. Per company’s estimates, “5G will create $10 trillion in economic output by 2035” on the heels of secular growth in data, connected devices and growing clout of cloud-computing, and edge-computing applications.

We believe Intel’s push into the emerging 5G infrastructure and edge computing market favors the company’s growth prospects in the longer haul.

In fact, per ResearchAndMarkets data, global 5G market is expected to reach $251 billion by 2025, at a CAGR of around 97% from 2020. Further, per Gartner, 65% of infrastructure service providers worldwide are anticipated to earn 55% of revenues via edge-related services by 2021.

Intel’s all-round attempt to explore the entirety of emerging technology market with new announcements is expected to fortify its competitive position against peers like Qualcomm QCOM in the network infrastructure market and AMD in the processor market, among others.
