Ericsson ERIC, in collaboration with QUALCOMM Inc. QCOM, a premium semiconductor company, recently completed a live demonstration of 4×4 multiple-input and multiple-output (“MIMO”) to achieve downlink data speeds of up to 380 Mbps during peak web traffic.

This recent development follows Ericsson’s broader partnerships with Australia-based telecommunication firms Telstra and Qualcomm for accomplishing high download speeds, enhancing capacity for commercial networks and delivering improved user experience for smartphones.

Ericsson’s Networks Software 16B and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X12 LTE modem were integrated to support 4×4 Spatial Multiplexing, in addition with 256 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (“QAM”) technology. The companies believe that this infrastructure will likely be incorporated in smartphones by 2016 for quicker access to content and applications.

According to Telstra, which had already demonstrated 1 Gbps network capability on a pilot basis in November, addition of 4×4 MIMO with 256 QAM technology to mobile networks is a milestone achievement toward full-fledged commercial application of 1 Gbps capabilities for customers. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X12 LTE modem is a potential instrument for bolstering Telstra and Ericsson’s network capacity.

In addition to the inherent benefits, the innovative technologies currently being developed by Ericsson, Telstra and Qualcomm, hold significant opportunities for operators. Leveraging the technical prowess of 4×4 MIMO on 256 QAM technology, operators can achieve better network performance, higher security and better digitization opportunities.

Meanwhile, the device and application industry is ever mutating, primarily fueled by the advancements made in technologies. Customers are demanding comprehensive network coverage to run applications on smartphones round the clock. Amid this backdrop, Ericsson and Telstra believe that network modernization and upgrade is critical for every operator, which in turn, makes such investments on Ericsson’s part lucrative.

Ericsson remains dedicated toward delivering high-class LTE experience to its subscribers across the world. Moreover, the company’s presence in major high-traffic LTE markets of Japan, the U.S., Canada, Australia and South Korea is an indicator of its immense global popularity. Recently, top LTE operators like Mobile TeleSystems PJSC MBT, Verizon Communications Inc. VZ and Swisscom have chosen the Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) stock as a reliable partner, as it has delivered over 200 LTE RAN and Evolved Packet Core networks internationally till date.
