Carnival Joins Health Bandwagon: To Serve Cage-Free Eggs

Zacks

Carnival Corporation CCL has joined the companies planning to serve cage-free eggs. The Florida-based cruiser, in partnership with the Humane Society of the United States (“HSUS”), announced that it will switch to 100% cage-free eggs in all its cruise brands by 2025.

Carnival operates 11 cruise line brands globally, including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Seabourn, Holland America Line, Cunard, AIDA Cruises, Costa Cruises, P&O UK and P&O Australia, as well as its newest brand, Fathom. The company plans to serve cage-free eggs across all these brands.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), cage-free hens are not kept in cages. Carnival is currently working with its suppliers and the HSUS to revise the animal welfare policy and meet this target.

Besides Carnival, Dunkin' Brands Group, Inc. DNKN also partnered with the HSUS in April, that 10% of all eggs used for its breakfast sandwiches in the U.S. will be cage-free by the end of 2016. Additionally, the company declared that it will only use gestation crate-free pork in the U.S. by 2022. In fact, Dunkin’ Donuts already uses cage-free eggs at 5% of its domestic needs.

Health consciousness is increasing among the masses and Americans are gradually refraining from food with higher calories, fat and sugars but low on vitamins, minerals and other micro-nutrients. Therefore, companies are increasingly changing their priorities to focus more on “good for you” items.

McDonald’s Corp. MCD declared in September that it will change the way it sources its eggs and use cage-free ones. The burger giant has announced that over the next decade, it will completely shift to cage-free eggs for its approximately 16,000 restaurants across the U.S. and Canada.

Additionally, General Mills Inc. GIS updated its animal welfare policy this July, and pledged to use only free-range and cage-free eggs for its products. The company mentioned that its largest international business, Häagen-Dazs, already uses 100% free-range eggs for its ice creams manufactured in Europe. The company is committed to use 100% cage-free eggs for all its U.S. businesses.

Carnival currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
