Google’s New Messaging App with Artificial Intelligence: WSJ

Zacks

The Wall Street Journal reported that Alphabet Inc.’s GOOGL Google is developing a mobile messaging application to compete with similar services offered by Facebook Inc. FB.

The twist?

It will use artificial intelligence.

Yes, the new service will leverage Google's artificial intelligence know-how, combining chatbots. These are software programs within a messaging app that search the Internet to answer a question.

The new app will let users send texts or a chatbot. "Instead of typing a query into Google’s search engine, users will type questions as text messages, to which chatbots will respond," the WSJ report stated.

However, nothing about the name of the service or the launch date is known.

Google hasn’t commented about the WSJ reports yet.

Messaging services are huge! In fact, Portio Research Ltd reports that these services have more than two billion users.

However, Google’s two messaging services — Hangouts and Messenger — lag Facebook’s WhatsApp and Messenger as well as Tencent Holdings Ltd.’s TCEHY WeChat, the most popular messaging app in China.

Whether the artificial intelligence feature will at last give Google some momentum in the Messaging services app space remains to be seen.

Alphabet currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Investors may also consider Amazon.com Inc. AMZN carrying a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
