Microchip’s Module First to Pass LoRa Alliance Certification

Zacks

Microchip Technology Inc. MCHP revealed that its RN2483 LoRa module had passed the LoRa Alliance's LoRaWAN Certification Program, and it is the first of its kind to do so.

The module was independently tested by Espotel's accredited test laboratory, to confirm if it satisfied the functional requirements of the latest LoRaWAN 1.0 protocol specification. In fact, Espotel said that it will use Microchip's RN2483 module as a standard in the further development of the LoRaWAN certification, interoperability and performance testing.

The module was tested for operation in the 868 MHz license-free band.

The assessment ensures that designers can swiftly and effortlessly integrate their application-specific end devices into any LoRaWAN network — which is a critical prerequisite for the global deployment of the IoT (Internet of Things) using low-power wide area networks (LPWANs).

The LoRaWAN standard enables low-data-rate Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) wireless communication with a range of up to 10 miles, a battery life of 10 years, and the ability to connect millions of wireless sensor nodes to LoRaWAN gateways.

Before the commencement of the certification program, Microchip's LoRa development team had conducted extensive verification and interoperability tests with major LoRaWAN network infrastructure vendors. For instance, the RN2483 module had already been accepted as the reference device by leading LoRa Core Network provider OrbiWise.

The launch of an accredited certification program is a key step toward the LoRa Alliance's mission to standardize an open specification for secure, carrier-grade, low-power wide area networks (LPWAN).

According to research firm Gartner, the burgeoning IoT market is expected to grow to a whopping 25 billion connected things in 2020. However, the explosive growth presents a challenge for developers as they strove to set up a simple, robust infrastructure with their limited resources. They require a solution that is easy to design, has a short time to market and comes with minimum total cost of ownership. Also, it should have great interoperability and be able to handle nationwide deployment.

Microchip's LoRaWAN module enables accelerating development time while minimizing development costs. Additionally, it offers the flexibility to connect and control a huge number of sensors and actuators, and takes up minimal space.

The RN2483 module’s scalability, mobility, robust communication and the capability to operate in harsh outdoor environments makes it perfect for a wide range of low-data-rate wireless monitoring and control designs.

Microchip currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Some better-ranked stocks that look promising in the semiconductor space include MaxLinear, Inc MXL, NVIDIA Corporation NVDA and Texas Instruments Inc. TXN, each carrying a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
