Yesterday, Microsoft Corp. MSFT released a preview of its Planner technology to those participating in the Office 365 First Release program.

Codenamed "Highlander", Microsoft executives describe this app as a lightweight project management tool. They believe it is set to become one of Office 365's next-gen portals.
The new app aims to make it easier to manage work in teams via enhanced visuals, notifications and tracking tools.
Highlander lets managers create a dashboard for group tasks through which they can allocate projects, track progress and reshuffle responsibilities.
The preview is available to First Release customers who have:
- Office 365 Enterprise E1,
- Office 365 Enterprise E3,
- Office 365 Enterprise E4,
- Office 365 Enterprise E5,
- Office 365 Education,
- Office 365 Education E3,
- Office 365 Education E4,
- Office 365 Business Essentials, and
- Office 365 Business Premium.
However, to get the preview, IT administrators will have to set it up.
To incorporate the Planner with Office 365 Groups, every new plan created in this app will automatically produce new Office 365 groups. At the same time, the pre-existing Office 365 Groups will get an associated plan.
Going Ahead
Over the next several weeks, Microsoft aims to complete the rollout of the preview to First Release customers globally. The company also announced that by 2016, the Planner will be generally available to all applicable Office 365 business and education clientele.
Microsoft currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
