Texas Instruments’ New Integrated Battery Monitor & Protector

Zacks

Texas Instruments TXN or TI recently launched bq76PL455A-Q1, an integrated battery monitor and protector (industry’s first), primarily for electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, and grid energy storage systems.

The new device has the capability to monitor 16 battery cells at a time. It offers precise cell-voltage monitoring for large batteries with up to 256 cells in a series and therefore allows smarter battery management in hybrids, electric vehicles and grid storage.

It is equipped with an isolated differential UART, which enables designers to discard the need for expensive controller area network (CAN) and isolators, therefore decreasing the bill of materials.

Moreover, its high integration features enable designers to use only one device compared with other solutions, which may need as many as four devices for a 48V system. This in turn helps in reducing printed circuit board (PCB) size and system cost.

The bq76PL455A-Q1 device is available in a thin quad flat pack (TQFP) 80 package and is priced at US$14.95 in 1,000-unit quantities and can be purchased from a TI store or through its authorized distribution network.

The company has been focusing on integrating different functionalities into single devices, encouraging customers to go for simpler, more power efficient and smaller form factor products that could potentially lower the cost of ownership and enable use in the smallest of applications.

The launch will enhance Texas Instruments’ differentiated product pipeline and is expected to improve market share for TI. However, Texas Instruments operates in an intensely competitive industry and companies such as Analog Devices can pose stiff competition.

Texas Instruments currently sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy). Other stocks worth considering are NVIDIA Corporation NVDA, Stamps.com Inc. STMP and Travelport Worldwide Limited TVPT. While NVIDIA and Stamps.com sport the same Zacks Rank as Texas Instruments, Travelport holds a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
