Zacks

Alcatel-Lucent’s ALU undersea cables subsidiary, Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks, has recently penned a turnkey contract with Bluesky Pacific Group to launch a new submarine cable system across the Pacific Ocean. This new cable system, named Moana Cable, will connect New Zealand to Hawaii through the application of the hi-tech submarine cable technology.

For this, Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks will install its highly developed submarine optical technology to escalate the capacity and network flexibility. As per contract terms, the company will oversee the project on a turnkey basis, which includes system design and installation as well as commissioning and marine operations.

Moana Cable – An Insight

The deployment of Moana cable, which will span over 9,700 km, is expected to complete in 2018. Upon completion, it will comprise of two segments. First segment, on the basis of two fiber pairs, will link New Zealand and Hawaii, serving Samoa and American Samoa along with considerably boosting route diversity for New Zealand. The second segment that is based on one fiber pair will unite the Cook Islands to the Samoa hub, spreading 1,700 km.

This will aid the operators in addressing the rising traffic needs stemming from increased usage of mobile broadband and the provision of fiber access to homes and businesses. Encouragingly, the Moana Cable will be the first long-haul submarine cable in the Pacific islands region that is build on the latest innovative 200 Gbit/s transmission technology and is armed with apex capacity of 20 Terabits-per-second between Hawaii and New Zealand.

In Conclusion

We believe the abovementioned development is at par with Alcatel-Lucent’s long term strategy of strengthening its footprint in the thriving submarine cables industry. Also, the deal seems apt amid increasing broadband demand in the Asia-Pacific region. Overall, this technological deal between Alcatel-Lucent and Bluesky Pacific will considerably amplify the connectivity from New Zealand and the Pacific to Asia and the US.
