Nokia Networks Wins Key LTE-A Contact from China Mobile

Nokia Networks, a division of Nokia Corp. NOK recently won a key contract to supply its latest TDD-LTE-A (Time Division Duplex Long-Term Evolution – Advanced) technology to China Mobile Ltd. CHL. Notably, China Mobile is the largest wireless operator in the world in terms of subscriber count. At the end of Aug 2015, the company had approximately 820 million wireless subscribers of which around 189.66 million were 4G TDD-LTE subscribers.

China Mobile has undertaken a massive project to install 1 million TDD-LTE base stations by the end of this year. Nokia Networks will provide TDD-LTE-A technology based on the Flexi Multi-radio 10 Base Station. This technology will support a wide range of frequency bands including 2.6 GHz (band 41), 2.3 GHz (band 40) and 1.9 GHz (band 39). Additionally, Nokia will supply carrier aggregation software for both macro and small cells to combine the various spectrums for faster data transmission and Flexi Zonesmall cells.

Although the financial terms of this contract are yet to be published, we believe it will be a major win for Nokia due to the gigantic size of the project. Importantly, Nokia’s biggest competitor for this project was LM Ericsson ERIC, the largest wireless network infrastructure solutions provider globally.

Recently, Nokia also received a vital contract from Qatar-based Ooredoo Group to provide mobile broadband infrastructure and professional services across the operator's footprint in the Middle East, North Africa and Southeast Asia.

Nokia has decided to acquire Alcatel-Lucent SA ALU for a consideration of € 15.6 billion (approximately $17.8 billion). The deal is likely to be completed in the first half of 2016. A full takeover of Alcatel-Lucent by Nokia will create a network solutions behemoth in the industry with a significant global customer base and solid operational efficiencies. Alcatel-Lucent has a strong presence in China and North America while Nokia enjoys considerable dominance in Europe and other parts of Asia.
