Amazon.com Inc. AMZN consistently pursues ways to extend the archive of television shows and films available on its Prime Instant Video.
Recently, Amazon’s streaming video site became the exclusive online subscription service to stream the first season of one of the best U.S. original series, Mr. Robot, beginning next spring. All the 10 episodes will be available for free to Prime members in the U.S., the U.K., Germany, Austria and Japan.
Produced by Universal Cable Productions, Mr. Robot is a dramatic thriller series starring Rami Malek and Christian Slater. The story deals with the life of a programmer who has a day job as a cyber-security engineer and doubles up as a vigilante hacker at night. The series won critical acclaim and boasts a 9 out of 10 rating on imdb.com.
The online retailer continuously expands its already large selection of movies and TV episodes available to customers as part of the Prime membership.
Recently, Amazon announced six TV show pilots to debut later this year on its streaming video service. These new shows and Amazon's original series will enhance its video streaming library, making it a significant force in the segment and increasing competition for Netflix Inc. NFLX Hulu and Apple Inc. AAPL. At the same time, it will help the company to penetrate further in the growing streaming market at a much faster rate.
Amazon is one of the leading players in an extremely fast-growing market. In the second quarter of 2015, the company’s revenues of $1.82 billion jumped 16.5% sequentially and a massive 81.5% year over year. Both product and service sales grew in double digits from the year-ago quarter, and contributed 79% and 21%, respectively, to total revenue.
