Leading dental laser maker BIOLASE Technology (BLTI) recently opened its offices in two of the largest Asian markets, China and India. The California-based company has established its Asian headquarters, “BIOLASE Technology Asia Pacific” in Shanghai, China, and a direct sales and service office, “BIOLASE Technology India Private Limited” in Mumbai, India.

BIOLASE reckons China and India as significant markets and sees a huge growth potential for its dental laser products in these lucrative emerging markets. The company expects its direct presence in these major markets to drive the adoption of its dental products by local physicians and significantly contribute to sales growth starting second-half 2011.

The company’s Chinese operation is located in the important Pudong business district and features an advanced clinical and laser service training facility. BIOLASE has already conducted, in May 2011, a training session in the new facility for its Chinese distribution network.

BIOLASE’s new Indian operation, located in the country’s business hub Mumbai, is staffed with experienced dental industry sales, administrative and service personnel. The company will soon establish training and showroom facilities in the new office, which will support sales activities in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

BIOLASE develops and markets lasers and related products for applications in medicine and dentistry. Its key products are dental laser systems that perform a broad spectrum of dental procedures, including cosmetic and complex surgical applications. Dental products distributor Henry Schein (HSIC) is one of its key distributors.

The company posted healthy revenues in first-quarter 2011, which climbed manifold to $10.6 million, exceeding its guidance of $9.25-$9.75 million. The better-than-expected sales were primarily boosted by expanded direct sales force in North America and healthy initial demand for the company’s new WaterLase iPlus all-tissue laser (launched in January 2011). BIOLASE recently adopted a direct and multi-distributor sales model in Germany, mirroring its strategy in North America.

Based on its first quarter results, BIOLASE raised its revenue forecast for 2011 to $60-$65 million from $55-$60 million. The company expects WaterLase iPlus to be a significant contributor to its top line through 2011 and beyond.
