Amazon’s New Kindle Paperwhite: Improved Features at $119

Zacks

Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN recently introduced a new Kindle Paperwhite with improved display and updated software features designed for book lovers.

The new Kindle Paperwhite comes with an improved display of 300 pixels per inch (ppi) similar to Kindle Voyage. The new device with 2x more pixels than the previous generation can deliver laser-quality text, making it easy to read comfortably even with the small text sizes. Additionally, it offers Bookerly, a new font which, the company claims, is even more readable on digital screens. Other improvements include features like hyphenation to break words at the right place, improved character placement and spacing between words, enhanced page layout, resulting in a better reading experience.

Moreover, like all Kindles, the new device includes all the important features — long battery life which lasts for weeks, latest touch technology, improved page-turning experience and an X-Ray feature offering useful insight about books. Also, it integrates Goodreads into Kindle’s e-reading software, helping readers to freely search and share books of their choice.

Priced at $119, Kindle Paperwhite is already available for pre-order and Amazon expects the shipments to start by the end of this month.

The world's largest Internet retailer constant upgrades its e-book reader to benefit customers. However, while Amazon may have the best e-reader, Apple certainly has the best tablet. Despite acquiring many new features over the years, Kindle it is not a full-blown tablet yet. Therefore, given that the tablet market is far larger than the e-reader market, Amazon’s Kindle is unlikely to catch up with Apple’s iPad any time soon.

According to a new report by PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers), the consumer e-books (excluding educational publications) will reach the £1 billion mark in value by 2018. The e-book market has witnessed an unprecedented growth, as both authors and readers have benefited from it. Amazon, through its Kindle reader and apps, is currently the leading e-book seller. However, if the company is unable to build further on its Kindle or slash prices drastically, it could see its share of overall book spending decline.

Amazon is one of the major players in an extremely fast-growing market. In the first quarter of 2015, the company’s revenues of $22.72 billion came within its guided range and just ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Both product and service sales grew strongly from the year-ago quarter and contributed 75% and 25%, respectively, to total revenue.

Currently, Amazon has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Some stocks in the same space that have been performing well are PetMed Express, Inc. PETS, ReachLocal, Inc. RLOC and Blue Nile Inc. NILE. All these stocks carry a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
