Ford Extends Recall of Vehicles with Takata Airbags to 1.5M

Ford Motor Co. F has expanded the recall of vehicles with faulty Takata airbags to 1,509,535 units. Of these, 1,490,764 vehicles are in North America, including 1,380,604 in the U.S. and federalized territories, 93,207 in Canada and 16,953 in Mexico.

The affected vehicles include 2005–2014 Ford Mustang vehicles built at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant for driver side airbag inflators; 2005–2006 Ford GT vehicles built at the Wixom Assembly Plant for driver side airbag inflators; 2004 Ford Rangers built in North America at the Edison Assembly Plant; and 2004–2006 Ford Rangers built at the Twin Cities Assembly for passenger side airbag inflators.

The company has received report of one incident in which the driver’s leg was injured by a metal fragment when a defective airbag deployed after a Ford vehicle crashed. The company’s dealers will replace the airbags of the recalled vehicles free of cost.

This move comes after last week’s declaration by Takata that 33.8 million of its airbags are defective. This will nearly double the number of vehicles recalled due to faulty airbags, marking the largest auto recall in the U.S. Apart from Ford, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. FCAU, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. HMC, BMW and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. have expanded their recall of vehicles following this announcement.

Ford currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). O'Reilly Automotive Inc. ORLY, carrying a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy), is a better-ranked automobile stock.
