Tyson Foods (TSN) Beats on Earnings, Revenue Miss Estimates – Tale of the Tape

Tyson Foods, Inc. (TSN) offers a wide array of meat products and commands a strong presence in all beef, pork, chicken and processed food products categories.

Continuous product innovations and strong momentum in most of its business segments is driving sales of the company since past many quarters. With a general shift of demand among health conscious consumers from red meat to low-calorie chicken and processed chicken food items, Tyson's endeavor to offer low-calorie protein foods like NatureRaised Farms brand is encouraging. Due to this, investors are eagerly awaiting Tyson's earnings report.

Investors should also note the recent earnings estimate revisions for TSN, as the consensus estimate has been moving slightly lower. Moreover, TSN has a mixed history in earnings season. Tyson has delivered positive surprise in two of the last four quarters, with negative surprises in the other two, making for an average surprise of 2.16%.

Revenue: Tyson Foods posted revenues of $9.98 billion. This missed our consensus estimate by $10.00 billion.

Key Stats to Note: Operating income increased 53.2% to $553 million. Operating margin increased 150 basis points to 5.5%.
