Microsemi’s New Radiation-Tolerant FPGAs to Target Aviation

Zacks

Microsemi Corporation MSCC, an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of a broad range of high-reliability and analog/mixed signal integrated circuits, has announced the availability of its radiation-tolerant field programmable gate array (FPGA) — RTG4.

Microsemi’s RTG4 FPGA has been developed to cater to the requirements of space and aviation programs, such as security, reliability, flexibility power efficiency, and highest speed at the lowest possible cost for each application.

The new RT FPGA offers 24 serial transceivers, with operation from 1 Gb/sec to 3.125 Gb/sec, protected SpaceWire clock and data recovery circuits, protected multiply-accumulate mathblocks, single event latch-up (SEL) and configuration memory upset immunity which requires no configuration scrubbing even in the harshest radiation environments.

The RTG4 FPGAs can be used in a wide range of high-speed and signal processing space applications which require up to 150,000 logic elements and nearly 300 MHz system performance. These applications include remote sensing space payloads, weather forecasting and climate research, land use, astronomy and astrophysics, planetary exploration and earth sciences. Other important applications include mobile satellite services (MSS) communication satellites as well as high altitude aviation, medical electronics and civilian nuclear power plant control.

FPGAs are semiconductor devices that allow programming/reprogramming even after the device has been installed. This flexibility makes the devices more expensive than regular programmable logic devices, so their use is relatively restricted.

Demand for FPGAs are increasing since they allow increased flexibility when creating designs and enable electronic device manufacturing companies to lower the research and development (R&D) costs. This can prove to be a long-term growth driver for Microsemi.

Microsemi has always been an innovator. The company’s portfolio consists of semiconductor and system solutions for defense & security, communications, aerospace and industrial markets.

The company has consistently introduced new and improved products that have enabled it to secure customer loyalty and boosted revenues. RTG4 FPGAs are Microsemi’s latest development used in many NASA and international space programs, further broadening its portfolio and increasing market share.

Microsemi reported decent first-quarter fiscal 2015 results, with both the top line and the bottom line matching the respective Zacks Consensus Estimate, driven by strong demand for its products. However, management’s continuous investments in FPGAs and mixed signal RF product offerings could increase the expenses, in turn impacting operating margins in the near term.

Microsemi currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Better-ranked technology stocks include Analog Devices, Inc. ADI, Inphi Corporation IPHI and Microchip Technology Inc. MCHP. All these stocks have a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
