Amazon Buys 2lemetry, Adds to Internet of Things Lineup

Zacks

Amazon.com Inc. AMZN is nimbly piling the deck for its own Internet of Things (IoT) strategy as it recently acquired developer platform 2lemetry.

Established in 2011, Denver-based 2lemetry is a platform for sending, receiving, and analyzing data from Internet-connected devices. Until now, the startup has raised at least $9 million. Salesforce Ventures is one of its investors.

2lemetry has been working towards using its platform for commercial applications such as retail environments. It has also developed a facial recognition technology, which the company believes “can trigger environment changes and 'real-life' analytics based on the recognized age and gender of individuals.”

A few analysts believe that Amazon’s first move into the IoT arena was in 2103, when it rolled out a platform called Kinesis. In real-time, Kinesis processes and analyzes high-volume data streams from a limitless number of sources.

Some of these analysts are of the opinion that 2lemetry’s technology and proficiency could be used to enhance the functionality of Kinesis.

This latest acquisition could also support Amazon’s recently rolled out event-driven Lambda cloud service.

When it comes to integrating connected devices into applications, the acquisition could also let Amazon have an upper hand over public cloud competitors like Microsoft MSFT and Google GOOGL.

By selling smart locks and thermostats and other pieces of home automation hardware, Amazon has been escalating its activities on the consumer side of the IoT.

In a consumer-focused service, 2lemetry technology could also be integrated with Amazon’s Echo connected-home assistant hardware.

Looking Forward

When Barack Obama became the President of United States in 2009, he responded optimistically to IBM’s IBM concept of a “Smart Planet.” He posted that the two huge weapons for economic revitalization were IoT and energies.

The existing state of affairs in the IoT space indicates exciting times ahead in the field of omnipresent computing. With the coming of age of IoT, scenarios that existed in science fiction are becoming a reality. This acquisition does have the potential to impact Amazon’s capabilities in the space and facilitate all the cool uses we’re beginning to see.
