Cypress Expands TrueTouch Touchscreen Controller Family

Cypress Semiconductor Corporation CY extended its TrueTouch Touchscreen Controllers portfolio with the addition of the TrueTouch CYTT21X/31X capacitive touchscreen controller family. The TrueTouch CYTT21X/31X controllers are at present sampling, but production is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2015.

The CYTT21X/31X controllers are based on 32-bit ARM ARMH Cortex M-Core processors, which are well-known for their high-efficiency MIPS/mW. The controller supports input from a passive stylus with a tip of 2.5 mm, which is necessary for writing in languages such as Chinese, Korean and Japanese. These languages need better character identification for reliable text input.

It also supports a face detection feature using the touchscreen sensor to detect a face 25 mm away to avoid accidental touches from unintentional disconnection of a call. The feature removes the requirement for infrared proximity sensors thus reducing production costs.

The controllers are designed for smartphones, e-readers and low-cost tablets and offer precision and linearity for fingers of different sizes and gloves of different materials and thicknesses up to 5 mm, including ski gloves. Also, users can automatically switch between glove, stylus and finger tracking without needing to switch settings.

The controller allows ultra-thin smartphone and tablet form factors by using Cypress's Single-Layer Independent Multi-touch (SLIM) sensor structures, further reducing production costs. The CYTT21X/31X controllers have up to 48 IOs with an I2C interface, and up to 44-IOs with an I2C and SPI interface. The controllers are available in mobile-friendly 44-pin, 48-pin and 56-pin QFN packages.

Cypress’s TrueTouch products leverage one of the industry’s most effective capacitive touch intelligent property (IP) selection to provide solutions for single touch, two-finger touch and multi-touch capability for screen sizes from 1.5” to 10.1".

TrueTouch controllers are known for delivering charger noise immunity, water-resistance ability, power-efficiency and precise finger tracking technology. The phones using these controllers offer superior performance and have an edge over those from competitors.

Additionally, Cypress has entered the wearables market with its TrueTouch controllers. The use of its TrueTouch controllers in Qualcomm QCOM and Sony’s SNE smartwatches could be a big achievement for the company.

We believe that the strength in wearable devices and continued innovation within them should lead to increasing demand for Cypress’ controllers over the next few years. The latest launch is expected to further boost its touch business.
