Broadcom Unveils Industry’s First 5 Gbps Speed Chipsets

Zacks

Semiconductor solutions maker Broadcom Corp. (BRCM) launched two new system-on-chip (SoC) devices that will offer superior capacity and spectral efficiency to mobile access carriers, thus enhancing current microwave backhaul infrastructure. The upgraded technology is intended to support the phenomenal upsurge in data traffic over wireless networks.

The new microwave baseband and RF (radio frequency) SoCs are powered with industry-leading speeds of 5 gigabit per second (Gbps) and increase spectral efficiency by four times compared with previous generation devices.

The advanced SoCs validate Broadcom’s continuous efforts to develop superior merchant silicon solutions for the microwave backhaul infrastructure market. These SoC solutions will enable mobile access carriers to operate on higher capacity over the same spectrum, in a modular and flexible manner.

Broadcom’s greater spectral efficiency and flexible frequency bands also translate into lower cost per bit, while supporting more users at higher speed. They will also offer mobile operators and telecom equipment manufacturers a "pay-as-you-grow" architecture, supporting capacity doubling and capacity quadrupling.

Over six billion people communicate with cellular networks, and the growth of mobile services such as 5G and LTE lead to mounting data demands. In order to keep up with consumer needs, it is imperative to optimize and improve efficiency in the backhaul, with superior technology that can offer higher capacity over the same spectrum.

Broadcom presently holds a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Some better-ranked semiconductor plays include Nitto Denko Corp. (NDEKY), STMicroelectronics NV (STM) and DSP Group Inc. (DSPG), each sporting a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
