Dr. Pepper Snapple (DPS) Beats on Earnings, Revenue – Tale of the Tape

Dr. Pepper Snapple Inc. (DPS) manufactures and distributes some of the most popular Carbonated Soft Drinks and Non Carbonated Beverage brands in the U.S.. It holds the #1 position in the flavored non-cola CSD market in the U.S. with a market share of almost 40% in the U.S. Dr Pepper soft drink, its most popular CSD brand, holds the #2 position in the flavored CSD market in the U.S.

Dr. Pepper Dr Pepper had an impressive run in 2014 delivering strong profits in all the three quarters reported so far. This was driven by pricing gains, productivity improvements and lower interest expense and taxes. Dr Pepper raised its earnings outlook twice in 2014 following better-than-expected results. However, growing health and wellness consciousness have been hurting sales of CSD of all soft drink makers.

Due to this, investors are eagerly awaiting DPS’ earnings report in order to set the record straight and to give guidance for the company’s outlook.

Investors should however note the recent earnings estimate revisions for DPS as the consensus estimate has been moving upwards. Moreover, DPS has decent history when it comes to recent earnings reports as the stock has posted positive surprise in the last four quarters with an average surprise of 16.53%.

Currently, DPS has a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy), but that could definitely change following Dr. Pepper’s earnings report which was just released. We have highlighted some of the key stats from this just-revealed announcement below:

Earnings: DPS beats on earnings. Our consensus earnings estimate called for EPS of $0.87/share, and the company reported EPS of $0.88 instead. Investors should note that these figures take out stock option expenses.

Revenues: DPS reported revenues of $1.50 billion. This surpassed our consensus estimate of $1.46 billion.

Key Stats to Note: Sales Volume increased 2% during the quarter.
