Google Rolls Out Beta Version of Cloud Monitoring Services

Google Inc. (GOOGL) recently rolled out the beta version of Google Cloud Monitoring for its cloud platform. Companies using Google's cloud environment can use Cloud Monitoring to keep a check on performance, capacity and uptime of Google Apps Engine, Compute Engine and Cloud SQL.

The all-around service stems from Google's acquisition of Stackdriver, a Cambridge, MA-based startup, in May 2014. This provided cloud-native monitoring for Amazon (AMZN) Web Services and other cloud environments. Its Alpha version was introduced in June in the midst of the annual Google I/O developer summit.

According to a blog post by Google product manager (and Stackdriver Co-founder) Dan Belcher, the novel beta, which will vie with Amazon Web Services’ CloudWatch, will, at the outset, focus exclusively on the Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

The objective will be to offer a consolidated way to observe workloads across public, including AWS, and hybrid clouds.

The post also said that all GCP customers, as compared to a select few, can now utilize the monitor to observe their Google App Engine, Google Compute Engine, Cloud Pub/Sub and Cloud SQL workloads. Stackdriver had added AWS Kinesis integration for existing Stackdriver customers.

The monitor provides metrics to help supervisors estimate the general health of their resources — clients can create cumulative views of their key systems and bring in custom metrics. They can also create dashboards of what they want to keep track of. It also provides data on performance and events where alerting policies are violated.

While no time frame on the non-Google cloud support was provided, Belcher said the company remains dedicated to offering a single tool to monitor applications across the Google Cloud Platform, AWS and hybrid environments.

Google currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Some better-ranked stocks include Digi International Inc. (DGII) and Infinera Corporation (INFN). Both hold a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
