Intel Reveals ‘Broadwell’ 5th Generation Chip at CES 2015

The world’s largest manufacturer of semiconductor products, Intel Corp. (INTC) unveiled its 14 nanometers (nm) Broadwell fifth-generation core processors at the Consumer Electronics Show ("CES") 2015.

Built on Intel's 14nm manufacturing process and Broadwell architecture, the new processors offer high performance, visuals and improved battery life. The Broadwell core processor reduces the size of the chips’ transistors from 22 to 14 nm and has around 35% more transistors than the previous generation. This boosts graphics and system performance.

The smaller design of the new offering will enable the usage of the processors in super-slim devices like Samsung’s new half an inch thick laptop and Apple’s (AAPL) 0.68 inch thick Macbook Air and will also help in improving battery life. The new family of Core microprocessor chipset is designed for laptops and desktops and can also be used across a wide range of devices, including 2-in-1 tablets, notebooks, Chromebooks, and mini PCs. Therefore, Broadwell chips are expected to feature in high-end embedded projects.

The 14nm chips were initially scheduled to be launched in early 2014. However, Intel could manage only one chip by fall as miniaturization is difficult. In September, Intel unveiled the Core M chip, its next-generation energy efficient, 14-nanometer processor designed to manufacture thinner, fanless and high-performance laptops and tablets with longer battery life. Core M was its first 14nm “Broadwell” chip architecture.

The chipmaker has been investing billions in R&D to manufacture next generation chips. Now it has pledged to shrink the chips to 7nm

Intel is the leader in the microprocessor market, both in terms of market share and product performance. The company has been focused on selling not just separate components but platforms optimized for specific markets including mobile, corporate and the digital home.

Along with this Intel also released its lower-end Atom (“Cherry Trail”) system-on-chips (SOCs) built on the same Broadwell architecture. Both 5th generation Core processors and Cherry Trail Atom SoCs are available for shipping now.

Intel currently holds a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Better-ranked stocks in the space include NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) and Rovi Corporation (ROVI), both carrying a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
