Honda (HMC) Acura to Recall 9,500 TLX V6 for Parking Issue

Zacks

Honda Motor Co., Ltd.’s (HMC) Acura division will recall TLX V6 vehicles of model year 2015 in the U.S. due to a problem in the 9-speed automatic transmission. According to the company, the recalled vehicles may have a manufacturing defect due to which the transmission may not shift into Park position even after selecting the position. If the driver does not apply the parking brake in such a condition, the vehicle may roll away. This might result in a crash.

While no accident or injury has been reported due to this issue as yet, Honda will recall around 9,500 TLX V6 vehicles to check the automatic transmission. Vehicle owners will be notified about the recall via email, Jan 2015 onward.

Once they take their vehicle to the dealerships, dealers will check the transmission and replace it, free of cost, if required. However, until the inspection is done, Honda has advised vehicle owners of the affected cars to use the parking brake while parking their vehicle.

Honda and most of its peers have been recalling vehicles in huge numbers this year. Recently, media reports revealed that Honda and its two Chinese joint ventures will recall 569,769 vehicles due to defective Takata airbags. The driver-side air bags manufactured by Takata have an inflator that was produced with a faulty part. Thus, when an air bag is deployed, the inflator can explode and shoot out metal fragments into the vehicle. As a result, automakers have been forced to recall a series of vehicles.

Apart from Honda, automakers such as Toyota Motor Corporation (TM), Ford Motor Co. (F), General Motors Company (GM) and Chrysler Group too are facing challenges owing to Takata-made airbags. Nearly 20 million vehicles have been recalled globally due to defective Takata airbag inflators. Of these, almost 13.4 million vehicles were recalled by Honda, which is Takata’s largest customer.

Honda currently carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell).
