The Axiom Genotyping Solution platform of Affymetrix Inc. (AFFX) has been selected by Toshiba’s Healthcare Company as the platform for its newly launched genotyping service.
Affymetrix teamed up with Toshiba to custom design and help in manufacturing the Japonica Array, which is based on the Axiom Genotyping platform. The array, containing unique genetic content, is especially tailor-made by Affymetrix for the Japanese population.
The array will facilitate genome sequencing and genotyping of blood, saliva or DNA samples. The genotyping service, launched by Toshiba, is expected to aid Japanese researchers in identifying genetic markers associated with diseases and distinct traits. This, in turn, should help determine appropriate response to disease therapy.
The Axiom Genotyping platform should help Toshiba provide a cost-efficient and high-quality genotyping service to researchers in various hospitals, universities and research agencies.
Of late, Affymetrix solutions have been chosen by a number of other enterprises. The company recently signed a multi-year supply agreement with Ariosa Diagnostics, under which the former’s arrays and instruments will be utilized as part of Ariosa’s Harmony Non-Invasive Prenatal Test (NIPT).
Affymetrix also partnered with BioDiscovery, Inc. to launch a new analysis software, which will be specifically used for handling large data sets generated by Affymetrix’ genetic analysis platforms in cancer research.
We believe that these partnerships will eventually help Affymetrix to improve its overall growth in the long run. The new developments in the gene expression business will boost Affymetrix’s long-term growth prospects. Moreover, it will enable Affymetrix to fight off stiff competition from the likes of Illumina Inc. (ILMN), Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc. (BIO) and Harvard Bioscience, Inc. (HBIO).
