Microchip (MCHP) Equips Devices for Harsh Environment

Zacks

During the SPS IPC Drives Conference in Germany, Microchip Technology Inc. (MCHP) announced the launch of its new 16-bit dsPIC33 Digital Signal Controllers (“DSC”) within the dsPIC33 "EV" family. The new product family is deemed suitable for devices which are used in harsh environments such as automotive and appliance applications. Apart from facilitating 5V operation, the invention has strengthened Microchip’s provision for automotive-sensing applications as well as motor-controlling devices.

New 5V dsPIC33 "EV" Family

The new 16-bit dsPIC33 DSC provides 5V operation that boosts robustness and noise immunity for devices used in automotive and appliance applications or any other harsh environment. It also contains other useful features such as 12-bit (ADC) and 6 advanced motor controls (PWMs). Furthermore, the product’s innovative operational amplifiers are ideal for motor-controlling applications.

The dsPIC33EV devices offer up to 150°C operation, as it contains AEC-Q100 Grade 0 that facilitates vigorous automotive functions ideal for under-hood applications. The device’s modernized peripheral integration features contain SENT and CAN peripherals that are used in automotive communications. Furthermore, execution of high-speed controlled algorithm is supported by its (DSP) acceleration with 70 (MIPS) performance.

Uses

The new 5V dsPIC33EV family devices are characterized by high performance and low system costs, and hence, are widely used across variable applications in appliances such as range hoods, sewing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators, fuel pumps and cooling fans. Thus, the new DSCs are expected to experience demand in industrial, automotive as well as appliance markets.

Moving Forward

Microchip Technology is one of the leading Flash-IP solution, mixed signal and microcontroller providers in the contemporary technology market. The company enjoys a strong goodwill in the semiconductor industry and owns a wide network of business internationalization process. The new invention will reinforce the company’s product portfolio and consequently, augment its revenue and margins in the near future.

Microchip Technology currently carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell) and has a market capitalization of $8.87 billion. Some better-ranked stocks in the industry include Inphi Corporation (IPHI), M/A-Com Technology Solutions Holdings, Inc. (MTSI) and AAC Technologies Holdings Inc. (AACAY). All the three stocks carry a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
