DOJ Enlists Unisys (UIS) to Upgrade Web Services Systems

Zacks

Information technology company Unisys Corporation (UIS) won a contract with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to modernize the National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS) systems used by the Office of Justice Programs (OJP).

DOJ's Information Technology Support Services-4 contract chose Unisys following a competitive bidding process. The contract stretches over three years and is potentially worth up to $19 million, assuming all options are exercised.

Per the contract, Unisys will upgrade NCJRS system by centralizing and consolidating the latter’s web services, and transferring them to a secure cloud environment. The upgrade will include infrastructure, content, applications and publishing processes, and will lead to cost reduction as duplicative processes are rationalized.

Unisys will also offer shared web services that will be managed through a common web content management system.

The project will give anywhere, anytime access to information and services to citizens and justice and law enforcement workers. Unisys will also develop mobile apps to facilitate easy access to NCJRS information through mobile devices on Windows, Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iOS and Android platforms. The project will allow customers and justice agencies to surf available resources without having to steer through several websites with disparate layouts.

NCJRS systems are used by the OJP to create awareness program and to offer technical support for the federal, state, local and tribal justice agencies. It is also used as a clearinghouse for the dissemination of criminal justice information.

Unisys has had experience in offering mission-critical services to the DOJ. In June last year, it won a $104 million blanket purchase agreement to support DOJ’s Consolidated Asset Tracking System, which lay at the heart of the department’s Asset Forfeiture Program.

Unisys’ high-margin services business has been witnessing robust growth of late, as corporates seek to keep up with the evolution in the information technology industry. Unisys is well poised to capitalize on the transformation as companies and agencies shift to cloud-based models.

Unisys presently sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy). Other notable stocks in the information technology services industry include Barracuda Networks, Inc. (CUDA) and Infosys Ltd. (INFY), both carrying a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
