Paint company, PPG Industries Inc. (PPG), recently unveiled its annual automotive color popularity data, which demonstrated that white continues to be the most popular car color globally based on 2014 automotive build data.
Per the data provided by PPG, white ranked first with 28%, up 3% from last year. This was followed by black having 18%, while silver and grey came in third with 13% each.
PPG Industries’ shares were up as much as 1.7% in the trading session on Tuesday. The stock closed the day at $208.50, gaining around 1.5%.
According to PPG, car manufacturers globally are looking for ways to give a new and unique appearance to their models and vehicle brands. As the color is selected about two to three years in advance of a model year, the auto makers combine color popularity with consumer preference. Nowadays, a wide array of colors are available to the manufacturers along with a wide assortment of variations of conservative hues such as white, silver, black and grey, and distinct effects such as micas, glass flakes, fine bright aluminum and hue-shifting pigments.
As per the trend, white is more popular in France, Italy, Spain and the UK. In response to the increasing demand for color innovation, PPG has launched 63 exterior shades for styling 2017-2018 model year vehicles. The collection is titled “Elements,” and includes four palettes – Good Life, I’m Pulse, Co-Leidescop and Introsense.
PPG Industries has a network of more than 25 color experts who analyze various design trends, preferences and the priorities across regional, cultural and global markets to determine factors that will influence future color choices.
