ABB’s MIDAS Library Enhances Control in Automated Mines

Zacks

ABB Ltd. (ABB) recently launched an innovative electrical control system aimed at enhanced operational control of automated mines.

The company’s System 800xA MIDAS Library will allow the mine engineers an increased control over the electrical system which can significantly aid the troubleshooting progress. MIDAS (mining integrated distribution automation system) is focused on remote substation monitoring of the mines, which is a crucial development as it allows the engineers to rectify problems speedily and safely.

ABB’s System 800xA, the base of the MIDAS library, is a platform for supervising diverse automated industrial processes. The International Electrotechnical Commission’s 61850 standard forms the basis of this platform. As per this standard, the platforms are required to be created using the common language of the automated substations and power distribution systems which will allow the developed mines across the globe to benefit from the MIDAS.

To further ease the control and troubleshooting process, MIDAS Library will require only one workstation with a solitary software package that will be sufficient for controlling the whole electrical system. This apart, the real-time analytics capabilities will allow the operators to gain deeper insights into the system, thereby enhancing the decision-making capabilities. It will significantly reduce the operational disruptions as well as costs incurred in a mine.

Moreover, the MIDAS Library eases the electrical control and monitoring for the intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) as well by integrating critical information. IED’s, being able to be connected to the automation system through Ethernet, will allow the engineers to control various substations in remote locations.

ABB’s MIDAS library is a unique system that is expected to significantly improve the operations in automated extraction and processing facilities of the mines. The most important feature of this system is its efficiency and global access, not to mention the high safety standards.

Currently, ABB carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy). Other stocks having the same rank in the sector include CLARCOR Inc. (CLC), Compass Diversified Holdings (CODI) and Quanta Services, Inc. (PWR).
