Ford (F) to Recall 850K Vehicles for Short Circuit Risk

Zacks

Ford Motor Co. (F) is recalling 850,050 vehicles in North America for the possibility of a short circuit in the restraints control module. In case of a short circuit, the airbag warning indicator will light up, while the deployable restraint systems such as airbags, pretensioners and side curtains may not work properly in case of an accident. This increases the possibility of injury.

Further, the short circuit might hamper the functioning of other systems that utilize information from the restraints control module. While Ford does not have any reports of accidents or injuries due to the problem, its dealers will replace the restraints control module free of charge to prevent any such incidents in the future.

The vehicles covered under the recall are 2013-2014 Ford C-MAX, Fusion, Escape and Lincoln MKZ. About 746,842 of the vehicles are in the U.S. and federalized territories, 82,962 in Canada and 20,246 in Mexico.

Some of the 2013-2014 C-MAX vehicles built at the Michigan Assembly Plant between Jan 19, 2012 and Nov 21, 2013 are being recalled. Further, certain 2013-2014 Fusion vehicles manufactured at the Hermosillo Assembly Plant from Feb 3, 2012 to Aug 24, 2013 are being recalled. Similarly, some of the 2013-2014 Escape vehicles built at Louisville Assembly Plant from Oct 5, 2011 to Nov 1, 2013 and the 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ vehicles built at the Hermosillo Assembly Plant between Apr 25, 2012 and Sep 30, 2013 are covered under the recall.

Currently, Ford retains a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Better-ranked auto stocks worth considering include Tesla Motors, Inc. (TSLA), Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. (NSANY) and Tata Motors Ltd. (TTM). All these stocks have a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
