A Go-Ahead for 5 Kid Shows for Third Pilot Season by Amazon

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) announced its decision to give a go-ahead to five animated kids’ pilots for the third pilot season debuting early 2015 on Amazon Instant Video.

These include three animated pilots — The Stinky & Dirty Show by Jim and Kate McMullan; Buddy: Tech Detective written by Jennifer Hamburgand and Niko and the Sword of Light writtenby Rob Hoegee — and two live-action pilots —Table 58 Written by May Chan and Just Add Magic directed by Joe Nussbaum.

These pilots can be viewed using Amazon Instant Video app available on Amazon’s Fire TV, Kindle Fire tablets, Fire phone, Apple’s (AAPL) iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Roku, Xbox, PlayStation, Wii, as well as other connected devices. Amazon Studios will take a call on which shows to produce, going forward, depending on viewers’ feedback.

Additionally, Amazon Studios will premiere new episodes of its first three original children’s TV series on Prime Instant Video — Tumble Leaf,Creative Galaxy and Annedroids — on Sep 5, Oct 3 and Oct 30, respectively.

Amazon claimed that each show is educational in nature and promotes learning through play, creativity and imagination instead of rote learning.

Amazon has been firing on all cylinders to boost its digital media sales and attract new users. In this regard, the company has focused on comedy, thriller and kid’s programs to expand its content line-up and make Prime Instant video service more attractive to viewers.

These pilots will further extend the archive of kid shows available on Amazon's video streaming library, making it a significant force in the segment and increasing competition for Netflix Inc. (NFLX) and Apple. At the same time, it will help Amazon to expand its footprint in the growing streaming market at a much faster rate.

Amazon is one of the major players in an extremely fast-growing market. In the second quarter of 2014, Amazon’s revenues of $19.34 billion were within its guided range and in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Both product and service sales grew in double digits from the year-ago quarter and contributed 79% and 21%, respectively, to total revenue.

Currently, Amazon carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell). Other stocks from the same sector is Chinese e-Commerce company Ecommerce China Dangdang (DANG), which sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
