Avery Dennison Graphics Solutions, a unit of Avery Dennison Corporation (AVY) has announced that University of Michigan’s solar car known as Quantum featured an Avery Dennison vehicle wrap film in the 2014 American Solar Car Challenge.

The American Solar Challenge (ASC) is a competition to design, build and drive solar-powered cars. The teams compete over a 1200-1800 mile cross-country road race across North America. The event is held every other year during the summer and is open to solar car teams from countries all over the world.

The University of Michigan solar car team is an entirely student-run organization that designs and builds solar electric vehicles and competes both nationally and internationally. Since its establishment, the team has built 12 vehicles.

Quantum, the team’s eleventh custom-designed solar car is a three-wheeler vehicle. The car weighs in at just around 320 pounds that can reach top speeds of 105 mph. The University of Michigan has won the ASC seven times before and placed third in the World Solar Challenge five times. The team won its third ASC in 2012 with Quantum.

The lowest-weight solar car will compete in the 2014 ASC which begins on Jul 21 in Austin, TX and finishes in St. Paul, MN. While Quantum’s sleek body is an important factor for victory in any race, Avery Dennison’s vinyl wrap gives the car a flamboyant look.

Avery Dennison MPI 1005 Supercast Easy Apply RS was fixed on Quantum for beauty and airflow efficiency. MPI 1005 Supercast Easy Apply film is digitally printed and protected with DOL 1360 Gloss overlaminate.

The film is valuable for the car as it is repositionable and slideable that makes car wrap application easy. In addition, Avery’s high quality films permit faster positioning and air-bubble free film application during installation. TKO Graphix has installed Avery’s vehicle wrap film on Quantum, this is the third time TKO Graphix have wrapped the car.

Avery’s continuous focus on making sustainable products, processes and business practices integral to all activities has formulated the high quality Vinyl films. The demand for car wrap is growing as it can be easily removed without damaging the original paint of the vehicle.

Currently, use of these Vinyl wraps is not limited to only solar cars. These digital and opaque films can also be installed on buildings, vehicles and boats, ATVs, motorcycles and RVs; as these car wraps can be installed quicker than a custom paint job and are more affordable than paint.

Pasadena, CA-based Avery Dennison manufactures pressure-sensitive materials and tickets, tags, labels and other converted products. The company has over 200 manufacturing and distribution facilities in more than 60 countries.
