Craigslist sprouts money — Revenue doubles in 2014, based on new fees

2014 Craigslist Annual special report

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla., June 24, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ — Revenue at Craigslist has doubled in the past year and will set a new record in 2014 at $335 million, at least in part due to a new $5 fee on auto and truck ads by dealers that is expected to yield more than $40 million this year.

The AIM Group, the world’s leading consultancy in classified advertising and interactive media, reported the projections Tuesday in its new Classified Intelligence Report special edition, “Craigslist sprouts money.

“The 41-page report provides a detailed analysis of how Craigslist will generate profit estimated at $269 million this year, or about 80 percent of net revenue. It also analyzes LeBonCoin, a general-classifieds site in France, which has a lot of similarities with Craigslist, and some key differences.

The report outlines significant design improvements made by Craigslist; why, counter-intuitively, advertisers are often happy when Craigslist starts charging for ads in their category; the category where Craigslist is likely to start charging for ads next, and the major security issues faced by Craigslist users.

“Craigslist is an amazing profit machine, a fantastic community service and a dangerous free-for-all, or free-for-most, all at once,” said Peter M. Zollman, editor of the report. “We look at the great upgrades Craigslist has made, the charges it’s likely to add, and the awful safety problems that it should be addressing but isn’t.

“We were the first to take a deep dive into Craigslist’s business model from its beginnings,” Zollman said. “The site has changed radically during the past year – and classified companies worldwide need to pay close attention. With thousands of competitors and imitators all over the world, Craigslist remains on top – and we show our clients why.”
