Amazon Unveils AppStream

Amazon Web Services Inc, an Amazon.com (AMZN) company recently launched Amazon AppStream, a service that allows developers the ability to stream resource intensive apps like 3D games and interactive HD apps from the cloud. AppStream is available for Windows, Android and iOS operating systems.

AppStream helps developers to offload some of the most graphically-intensive components of their apps to the cloud. The aforesaid feature relieves developers from the task of designing hardware-specific apps.

AppStream runs on Amazon cloud’s new GPU instances called G2. The application runs in the cloud and hence can handle enormous computational and storage needs, regardless of the gadgets used. AppStream allows one to build complex applications that can be run on simple devices. The application thus built will no longer be limited by physical storage constraints or graphics rendering capabilities of the device.

In case of Amazon AppStream, the customer proprietary code remains in the cloud and hence is easy to update and safe from tampering and theft. AppStream also provides the flexibility to stream a part of the application from the cloud while running the remaining part on the client’s device. The application starts instantly and hence the delays usually involved in downloading and starting a native application can be done away with.

Streaming of games from the cloud has not been very popular so far and most of the companies attempting have had multiple issues that forced them to close shop. This capability, which is based on Intel and NVIDIA technology is likely to make game streaming easy. So there could be changes to the gaming market over time.

Amazon has gone on to become a veritable consumer electronics giant from being an Internet retailer initially. The company is planning to refresh its line-up of Kindle Fire tablets in the next few months. But Amazon might not stop there. If rumors are to be believed, the company has many more devices in the works, including a smartphone, an audio streaming device, and an Apple (AAPL) TV competitor.

Though Amazon’s hardware competes both with Apple and Google (GOOG), it’s much more destructive for the search giant. This is because Amazon has adopted Google’s Android operating system, but not Google Play.

Currently, Amazon has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Currently, Jarden Corp (JAH) with a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) can also be considered as a lucrative investment.
