OmniVision Unveils 13MP Sensor

Advanced digital imaging solutions provider, OmniVision Technologies, Inc. (OVTI) launched a PureCel™13-megapixel CameraChip sensor, OV13850, for smartphones and tablets.

OmniVision’s latest offering, OV13850, supports an active range of 4224 x 3136 pixels (13.2-megapixels (MP)). It operates at 30 frames per second (FPS) speed for high-speed photography. It is also capable of taking 1080p 4K2K ultra-high definition (HD) video at 30 FPS speed. Its post-binning resampling filter reduces spatial and image artifacts around the edges and offers clear images.

The new image sensor can comfortably fit into an industry standard 8.5 x 8.5 x 5 mm module. It consumes less power and thus extends the battery life of these devices. Smartphone and tablet manufacturers are likely to benefit from such a power-efficient solution.

Currently, image sensors are gaining popularity due to the rapid adoption of smart devices.The latest range of smartphones and tablets support higher megapixel camera sensors so that consumers can enjoy better picture quality while capturing videos and photos on the move.

According to IDC, smartphones may witness 71.1% growth within a span of four years i.e. 2013–2017. Its shipments may reach 1.733 billion units in 2017. Further, tablets may see a 78.9% jump in the same time period to touch 406.8 million units. The solid growth prospects in these two markets coupled with OmniVision’s market position will likely boost sales of its 8MP solutions.

OmniVision is one of the largest suppliers of CMOS image sensors to multiple end markets, particularly the handset, DSC, DVC, notebook, webcam, security and medical markets, and has a significant share of the total image sensor market. The company has consistently delivered technologically advanced products.

OmniVision reported revenues of $373.7 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2014, up 11.2% sequentially and 44.8% over the prior-year period. Revenues exceeded management’s guidance range of $355 million–$390 million. The camera phone market was OmniVision’s largest revenue contributor, bringing in 63% of the total revenue. The company witnessed strong demand for 8 MP and 12 MP sensors for smartphones in Asian markets.

OmniVision shares carry a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Other stocks that are performing well at current levels include Melco Crown Entertainment Limited (MPEL), Akorn Inc. (AKRX) and Northern Oil And Gas Inc. (NOG). All these stocks carry a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
