ABB to Boost Iraq’s Grid Development

Close on the heels of winning a $20-million Chinese shipyard deal, ABB Ltd (ABB) has now clinched an order for the delivery of utility communications solution that will be serving seven electricity distribution control centers located in Iraq. The order was awarded by LS Industrial Systems (LSIS) and was booked in the second quarter of 2013. However, the financial details of the contract were not disclosed.

The scope of the contract includes providing advanced wireless radios to link seven regional control centers and facilitate automation of power distribution system.

The contract is part of Iraq Ministry of Electricity’s broader infrastructure improvement initiative. The main objective of this contract is to establish a reliable power network to support economic and social developments in the country.

Effective and efficient communication system is essential for smooth coordination of grids’ operations. It provides high-performance data services required by most operational networks and supports multiple applications. ABB’s communication system solution will have the capacity of transmitting data from 428 distribution substations and 150 maintenance centers in the grid to seven regional control centers. In addition, the electrical solution will also comprise broadband wireless radio to transfer data as well as voice transmissions.

This high-capacity wireless communication network will largely benefit the grid, as the radios can communicate over distances over 50 km, ensuring a scalable, highly-flexible and cost-effective solution.
