3M Food Safety, a subdivision of the Healthcare segment of 3M Company (MMM), recently announced that it has launched a new pathogen detection technology known as ‘3M Petrifilm Salmonella Express System’.
The new technology is specifically designed to focus on the detection of Salmonella, a group of bacteria that causes food-borne illness. The system can both detect and confirm the presence of Salmonella in food process environmental samples and even in rich foods like dairy, fruits and vegetables, raw meat, seafood and pet food.
The new technology is more advanced than the traditional agar methods and is available in ready-to-use samples. In addition, the new system contains a Confirmation Disk which confirms the presence of presumptive positive Salmonella colonies on the plate in only 4 hours and the end results are available in 44 hours.
The 3M Petrifilm Salmonella Plates are likely to revolutionize the U.S. food processing industry with this all-in-one method which provides more uniform results at a speed two times faster than the traditional agar methods. At present around 90% of the top 100 U.S. food processing companies are using the existing 3M Petrifilm Plates and rely on its results for food safety. AOAC Research Institute has also accredited 3M’s new technology with a Performance Tested Method (PTM) validation.
Together with its subsidiaries, 3M operates as a diversified technology company with manufacturing operations across 70 countries worldwide. The company aims to deliver innovative security solutions to businesses and governments worldwide, thus maintaining the security of people and documents.
3M currently carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell). Other stocks that look promising and are worth a look now are Compass Diversified Holdings (CODI), Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. (HUWHY) and ITT Corporation (ITT), each carrying a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy)
