Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., the business arm of Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM), will supply its new Snapdragon 800 processors to Microsoft Corporation’s (MSFT) Windows RT 8.1-based tablets.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 quad core chipset supports 3G/4G LTE modem with ultra HD graphics and faster clock speeds of up to 2.2 GHz per core. Hence, it is very helpful for users of Windows RT 8.1-based devices. Moreover, it offers better battery life and users of the new operating platform will also get free updates during the latter part of the year from the Windows Store.

Windows devices integrated with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 processors will hit the stores during the latter part of the year.

Most high-end smartphones are powered with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors as the company is one of the leading suppliers of LTE-based chipsets. The popularity of Snapdragon processors will further gain traction as recently launched handsets like Samsung Electronic’s Galaxy S4, Sony Corp’.s (SNE) Sony Xperia Z and Research in Motion’s (BBRY) new BlackBerry Z10 are using Qualcomm’s chipsets.

Moreover, world’s largest telecom operator, China Mobile has set a target to deploy nearly TD-LTE 200,000 base stations by the end of 2013. China Mobile has already selected Snapdragon and Gobi-based LTE-TD smartphones as it runs well on such home grown networks. This will create a huge growth opportunity for the company.

In the recently concluded quarter, Qualcomm shipped approximately 173 million CDMA-based MSM chipsets, up 14% year over year and expects to maintain this trend in the next quarter.

Currently, Qualcomm carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
