Sigma-Aldrich Corporation (SIAL) has signed a deal with Applied Minerals, Inc. (AMNL), a leading global producer of halloysite clay solutions. Under the deal, Aldrich Materials Science, a strategic technology initiative of Sigma-Aldrich, will market and distribute research quantities of Dragonite halloysite clay. Applied Minerals, on the other hand, will market its halloysite clay solutions to customers through its domestic and international sales network.
Applied Minerals is a leading producer of halloysite clay, which is offered under the Dragonite brand. The Dragonite halloysite clay, due to its high surface area, non water swelling nature, small particle size and unique porous tubular morphology, is able to adsorb around 85%-245% of its weight in oil in a seawater environment. Applications of the material include high-value solutions for flame retardancy, controlled release, environmental remediation, nanocomposites as well as many other areas.
Due to its unique properties, Dragonite halloysite clay is widely used by researchers to deliver environmentally sustainable solutions in a growing number of high value applications. The addition of the product will increase the portfolio of Sigma-Aldrich that caters to engineers and materials scientists.
