TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. (TRW) announced the launch of its new 'bag in roof' airbag system replacing the typical passenger airbags that are mounted in the instrument panel. This new and compact airbag system will reduce the risk of passenger injuries and will also allow for improved interior design aesthetics, ergonomics and functionality.

The importance of occupancy safety systems is increasing with time as increasing focus is being placed on reducing road fatalities. With the trend, TRW has also tried to upgrade its products accordingly. The introduction of the new airbag system is another step in that direction.

Last month the company announced the launch of a new vacuum sensor in order to make its brake actuation systems more efficient. Prior to that, the company also announced an upgraded version of Electric Park Brake (EPB) system, that will enable users to enjoy a wide range of safety benefits and improve performance of the braking system in case of acute emergency.

In the first quarter of 2011, TRW Automotive earned a profit of $292 million or $2.21 per share, improving substantially from $209 million or $1.65 per share in the same quarter last year. Sales also rose 15% to $4.11 billion driven by an increase in volume. The company expects full year 2011 sales in the range of $15.7 billion−$16.0 billion, including $3.9 billion for the second quarter of the year.

Based in Michigan, TRW Automotive Holdings is a leading manufacturer of advanced technology products and services for the automotive markets. Key competitors of TRW include Magna International Inc. (MGA), Johnson Controls Inc. (JCI) and Navistar International Corp. (NAV).
