Maxim Invests $65 Million in Expansion and Equipment Upgrades for San Antonio Manufacturing Operation

PR Newswire

SAN ANTONIO, June 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Maxim Integrated Products, Inc., a Fortune 1000 semiconductor company headquartered in Silicon Valley, will invest approximately $65 million to expand its semiconductor fabrication facility (fab) in San Antonio. Maxim, which purchased the 380,000 square foot facility from Philips Semiconductors, Inc. in 2003, will also be upgrading fab equipment.

Maxim employs approximately 540 manufacturing and engineering staff in San Antonio, where it produces integrated circuits (ICs) for electronic devices such as smart phones, tablet computers, automobile infotainment systems, and industrial equipment. Manufacturing staff will be added over time as the expansion is completed and production ramps to capacity.

“Right here in San Antonio, we make ICs that enable smartphones to have more vivid displays and clearer audio, and our ICs let portable devices last longer on a battery charge,” said Chris Michael, Managing Director of Maxim’s San Antonio fab. “The quality of our employees and San Antonio‘s business-friendly approach made it easy for Maxim to decide to grow its footprint in this community.”

“To keep pace with the technological needs of electronics designs, ICs must continuously increase their complexities or the number of functions they perform. Factories become outdated if the precision instruments used in the fabrication process do not keep pace with the market,” said Michaels. “This retooling and expansion initiative is a major investment and acknowledgment of our San Antonio employees’ commitment and productivity.”

San Antonio is proud to be home to innovative companies like Maxim Integrated Products which are part of a growing manufacturing sector that provides a $10 billion annual economic impact to our local economy,” Mayor Julián Castro said. “In addition to expanding their advance manufacturing operations in San Antonio, Maxim is a valued corporate partner that is committed to advancing higher education in our community by collaborating with UTSA to provide students with internships, career guidance and education in nanotechnology.”

Maxim was recently recognized by the San Antonio Water System with a “Refreshing Ideas Award,” acknowledging its effective methods to reduce water consumption. Maxim’s quadruple dividends project helped the company save 55 million gallons of water annually through changes such as condensation harvesting, third-stage reverse osmosis, and analytical reclaim.

In 2011, Maxim joined forces with Habitat for Humanity to help build homes in San Antonio‘s Palo Alto Neighborhood for low-income families. Employees volunteered in this program, and the 282-home subdivision was complete in June 2011.

Maxim creates high-performance semiconductor products and is a leader in analog innovation and integration. It is unique among semiconductor companies in the range of disparate analog functions that it can combine onto a single chip, helping its customers get to market faster with systems that are smaller and consume less power. Maxim has approximately 9,300 employees worldwide, of which nearly 1,400 are in Texas, including sites and offices in Farmers Branch (near Dallas), San Antonio, and Austin.

Maxim’s $65 million expansion of its San Antonio fab is part of the company’s $200 million multiyear investment to upgrade its U.S. manufacturing facilities in Oregon, Texas and California. This investment is consistent with previously disclosed estimates for capital expenditures in Maxim’s fiscal years 2012 and 2013.
