Monsanto Company (MON) announced the acquisition of Beeologics, the researcher and developer of pest and disease control biological tools and a renowned bee health restorer. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Beeologics expertise, its continuing discovery and development pipeline, is expected to enable Monsanto to further explore the use of biological tools in agriculture while supporting the sustainability of agricultural systems as well. Currently, the company has been researching on a possible product to help protect bee health, such as control of colony collapse disorder, which came as a disaster, killing nearly 25% of hives in 2006-'07. Monsanto affirmed continuing Beeologics' work to promote bee health under its ownership.
Beeologics' current biological research projects use a "naturally-occurring process" to provide targeted pest and disease control. Monsanto, which has proven expertise in managing a technology pipeline, are anticipated to support the Beeologics team and the Technology Advisory Board in advancing its pipeline. Thus, the combined researches of the two companies are anticipated to provide farmers with new approaches toward the pest and disease challenges in their firm.
Of late, Monsanto Company's genetically altered corn seeds have been reported of getting infected with some seed resistant bugs. In such a scenario, the company affirmed that they are ready with potential safeguards in place, for any adverse situation.
