EL PASO, Texas and HOUSTON, Sept. 27, 2011 /PRNewswire-iReach/ — Texas-based MONUMENT Roofing Systems, a division of MONUMENT Constructors, Inc., was chosen to install approximately 575,000 square feet of Duro-Last Cool Zone roofing system on apartment units owned by the Housing Authority of the City of El Paso (HACEP). HACEP selected the white PVC membrane roofing material because it meets high level energy efficiency, sustainability standards.
The modernization of seven residential apartment complexes owned and maintained by HACEP at 5300 E. Paisano Drive is funded by federal stimulus money it received through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act 2009 and administered through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. MONUMENT started the project on May 4, 2010, and just recently completed it.
“HACEP received $12.7 million in stimulus funds to improve the quality of our public housing communities, most of which was spent to replace old roofs,” said Gerald W. Cichon, Chief Executive Officer. “The high-quality, energy-efficient Duro-Last roofing material reflects hot thermal heat away from the buildings and reduces the costs of keeping those units cool during the hot summer months where we had nearly 50 days of triple digit temperatures this year.”
MONUMENT replaced the existing dark roof material with Energy Star rated Duro-Last white “cool roof”. The high reflectivity and emissivity features of the new white roofing material not only translate into energy savings for HACEP, but can also qualify the project for LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) which provides the nationally recognized rating system for evaluating a building’s environmentally efficient features.
The “green” benefits from installation of the “cool roof” system, along with other sustainable initiatives for these buildings, will prove very valuable to HACEP. These facilities will have measurably lower operating costs, resulting in increased asset values. The new cool roofing system is designed to conserve energy and water; provide a healthier and safer working environment for both employees and residents; qualify for energy efficiency incentives; and demonstrate HACEP’s commitment to overall environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
MONUMENT Constructors, long an industry leader in commercial “green” roofing technology, has connected an energy efficiency partner, Texas-based company, CLEAResult, to the project to help identify, quantify and qualify potential energy savings available to HACEP through El Paso Electric incentive programs.
“Being a good corporate neighbor is fundamental to Monument’s business strategy,” says Charles R. Smith, President and Founder of Monument Constructors, Inc. “We are a proud third generation family-owned Texas company. When we install roofs, we respect the fact that we are putting roofs over people, our neighbors. We all share this planet and MONUMENT will continue preserving our environment one building and roof at a time.”
