Per Reuters, Tesla, Inc. TSLA has partnered with Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. AMD to develop artificial intelligence chip for in-house autonomous electric cars. The company has received the first set of chips for implementation and is running trials on it.

This move by the company comes as part of CEO Elon Musk’s plan to incorporate self-driving technology in Tesla’s cars by 2019.

A total of company’s 50 employees along with Jim Keller, head of Autopilot hardware and software, are currently working on the project.

Apart from this recent development, Tesla has teamed up with NVIDIA, which offers an artificial intelligence computing platform for full driverless capability. The platform uses deep learning to identify and understand the car’s surroundings.

Previously, Tesla had joined forces with Mobileye to develop driver-assistance technology for electric cars. In 2016, the partnership was dissolved due to Tesla’s car accident powered with Mobileye’s technology.

In line with the company’s Master Plan, it continues to focus on developing self-driving technology. Currently, its autonomous vehicles, already equipped with the required hardware for self-driving, are effortlessly capable of functioning on own during highway driving. At present, Tesla works on the software part in order to make autonomous driving a reality for its fleet of vehicles.

Some important companies in the auto space include Toyota Motor Corporation TM and Allison Holdings, Inc. ALSN.
