ABB Launches QuickSafe Device to Protect Electrical Systems

ABB Ltd. ABB released the next-generation QuickSafe surge protection device (“SPD”), which delivers complete, continuous protection for electrical equipment from surges in power supply.

The device is build upon the company’s patented thermal disconnection technology, and boasts a pioneering new integrated safety backup system.

SPDs, which are used in huge amounts in industrial and residential applications, shield electrical equipment from temporary surges in power, which could be caused by operations on the grid or lightning. These transitory surges vary in terms of strength. While powerful surges can literally melt solid-state circuits and components, repeated small surges have the capacity to cause damage and can result in the loss of valuable stored data.

SPDs typically deliver constant system protection over their lifetime. However, according to research from the University of California, global warming might increase lightning strikes by over 50% by the end of the century. This might reduce the duration of the expected life span of SPDs.

Further, an SPD’s life span depends on the size and frequency of the surges it faces. This makes the timing of its replacement quite unpredictable. Also, if in case the SPD’s lifetime ends before it is replaced, then that leaves the equipment that it protects vulnerable.

ABB’s new QuickSafe SPD features two electronic components per device. It has an indicator which shows which component needs replacing, thus allowing effortless detection and safe replacement of the damaged component, while the SPD’s second component continues to protect the equipment.

Thus, this reserve system eliminates the risk of the device being left unguarded, and enables operators to plan required SPD replacements at suitable times with barely any interference with normal operations and services.

The device offers unprecedented protection to electrical equipment like mission critical installations for data centers, banks and hospitals, and can potentially save millions of dollars by averting unplanned or unforeseen outages.

ABB currently carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell). Better-ranked stocks in the broader sector include ESCO Technologies Inc. ESE, II-VI Inc. IIVI and Tetra Tech, Inc. TTEK. While ESCO and II-VI sport a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), Tetra Tech carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
