The Walt Disney Company’s DIS Star Wars: The Force Awakens made a great start in China collecting $53 million in the opening weekend. The movie, which hit the theaters on Dec 18, 2015 in the U.S., was released on Jan 9, 2016 in China.

Surpassing all records domestically, the flick has broken all records in Australia, Russia, Britain, and China as well. The company is estimated to have collected $33 million in the very first day of release in China – marking the highest opening day collection in the nation for Disney.

Overall, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has amassed $1.7 billion since launch, scaling up to the third-highest position in terms of collections of all times. The movie is now set to break the records of Avatar (2009) and Titanic (1997). Avatar is the highest grosser ever with worldwide collections of $2.8 billion while Titanic crossed the $2 billion milestone.

The seventh installment from the Star Wars line-up touched the $1 billion mark in the first twelve days of release, setting the record of reaching the mark in the shortest span of time and also beating Jurassic World, which had managed to cross the figure in 13 days.

In the opening weekend, the movie crushed all box-office records with a massive collection of $517 million worldwide. Domestically, Disney earned $238 million in the opening weekend, marking the biggest opening in Hollywood’s history and also smashing the $208.8 million record set by Jurassic World.

Internationally, the company minted $279 million in the opening weekend. The movie’s overall collections of $517 million came a close second to Jurassic World’s $525 million. Star Wars: The Force Awakens could have surpassed Jurassic World records if the movie would have been released in China simultaneously.

Coming a decade after the last release, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, the entertainment world had been set abuzz with Disney’s announcement of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

Disney carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) and shares space with Twenty-First Century Fox, Inc. FOXA, Time Warner Inc. TWX and Comcast Corporation CMCSA.
