Hilltop Holdings Inc. HTH reported third-quarter 2015 operating earnings per share of 47 cents, outpacing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 11.9%. Earnings improved 81% year over year. The better-than-expected bottom line was fueled by higher interest income.
Net interest income increased 34% year over year to $116 million. Non-interest income surged 40% year over year to $296.5 million.
Hilltop incurred provision for loan losses of $5.6 million, up from $4 million a year ago. Total interest expenses more than doubled year over year to approximately $15.3 million from about $7.4 million. Non-interest expenses rose 30.9% year over year to $333 million.
Financial Update
As of Sep 30, 2015, Hilltop’s cash and due from banks was $527 million, significantly down from $636 million at Sep 30, 2014. The securities portfolio was almost flat year over year at $1.3 billion as of Sep 30, 2015.
As of Sep 30, 2015, total shareholders’ equity was $1.7 billion, up from $1.4 billion at the end of Sep 30, 2014. Total assets appreciated to $12.4 billion as of Sep 30, 2015, up from $9.2 billion as of Sep 30, 2014.
Meanwhile, total liabilities rose to $10.7 billion from $7.8 billion at Sep 30, 2014. Total deposits increased to $6.8 billion from $6.6 billion at Sep 30,2014. The company held free cash of $41.1 million at the end of the reported quarter.
Share Repurchase
Under the $30 million share repurchase program approved in the second quarter of 2015, the company bought back $13 million worth shares in the reported quarter.
Profitability Metrics
As of Sep 2015, Hilltop’s book value was $17.35 per share, up 19.6% year over year. Annualized net interest margin deteriorated to 4.2% at the end of the third quarter from 4.38% a year ago. Return on average equity increased to 10.97% from 6.51% in the year-ago period.
Hilltop’s total capital ratio was 19.29% as of Sep 30, 2015 compared with 19.28% in the year-ago quarter. Moreover, PlainsCapital Bank’s total capital ratio was 18.13% at the end of the reported quarter, up from 14.21% as of Sep 30, 2014.
