Mondelez International, Inc. MDLZ recently launched belVita breakfast biscuits in China amid growing consumer demand for healthier snacks.
Consumers in both developed as well as emerging countries are demanding nutritious food products made from simpler ingredients. Food companies are eliminating/reducing unwanted sugar, cholesterol, trans and saturated fat and sodium content from their products.
Mondelez also plans to offer more good-for-you snacks and expects 50% of its product portfolio to comprise “well-being” items by 2020, higher than the current one-third. Apart from simplifying the ingredients and improving nutritional value of the existing products, the company will develop healthier and natural items to meet the growing consumer demand.
In this regard, Mondelez is expanding the distribution of the nutritious belVita breakfast biscuits. These contain at least 50% wholegrain cereals, and provide a minimum of 55% of energy from carbohydrates along with at least 3g fiber per 100g serving.
belVita breakfast biscuits are already available in 50 countries. In China, the biscuits come in three flavors — milk & cereal, nuts & honey and mixed berry.
Biscuits form quite a popular snack category in the country where Mondelez holds the top position backed by brands like Oreo, Chips Ahoy! and TUC.
Many other food companies are devising newer ways to meet the evolving demand for healthier food items. Companies like General Mills, Inc. GIS and Kellogg Company K have committed to remove artificial flavors and colors from their cereals, while The Hershey Company HSY plans to use simpler ingredients like locally produced milk, roasted California almonds, cocoa beans and sugar in the chocolate items.
Mondelez currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
