ON Semiconductor Corp. ON released MatrixCam video development kit (VDK), a new open imaging platform especially for low power video streaming applications. The new VDK hardware and software design documents can now be downloaded from ON Semiconductor and its partners’ portal. Sample units are available for sale priced at $400 per unit.
MatrixCam leverages ON Semiconductor’s superior imaging technology and is designed to boost video adoption within Internet of Things (IoT) products and to hasten OEMs’ ability to offer advanced solutions to the IoT market. The main applications that can be supported by the VDK are home automation systems, access devices, baby monitors, advanced lighting controls and smart appliances.
The MatrixCam VDK comprises ON Semiconductor’s AR023Z 1/3-inch format CMOS image sensor, which has a 1928(V) x 1088(H) resolution active-pixel array that offers low light performance.
It provides capabilities including smart streaming, with the wake-up option being set off by Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or via the motion-tracing incorporated passive infrared sensor. Upon wake-up, a push alert is sent to an allotted portable electronic device including smartphones and tablets notifying the user that a live stream or a picture should be viewed.
It can connect to cloud services such as Amazon AMZN Web Services and Google GOOGL Cloud Platform, offering support for both video-on-demand and live streaming via a number of interconnectivity choices including Wi-Fi, Ethernet and BLE. The VDK can easily be configured with the help of a web-based Graphical User Interface or a dedicated mobile application.
ON Semiconductor has a well-diversified business and an end-market focus that would typically generate relatively steady revenues throughout the year. Also, we expect the recent product launches and numerous design wins in the imaging market to act as strong catalysts over the long term.
